Lot S171 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona
426/425 HP, 4-Speed
Car reached 410,000 but did not sell...

The absolute wildest Mopar specials ever built began with the Charger Daytona in 1969. Produced to be approved for NASCAR racing, the Winged Warrior was the first racer to break through the 200 MPH level on the oval tracks. With the aerodynamic nose and towering rear spoiler, the imposing appearance itself assured legendary status that continues to this day. But when coupled with the mighty 426 Hemi engine and 4-speed transmission, this car reigns as a Mopar performance flagship of the muscle car era. Only 22 Hemi 4-speeds were built, out of a total production run of 503 Charger Daytonas. This stunning T5 Copper Metallic Hemi Daytona was restored by a well known Mopar enthusiast and was completed in 2005. The White interior contrasts perfectly with the exterior trim. Certainly a rare and spectacular example of one of the most impressive muscle cars to roam the streets and dominate the tracks.

Early in 1968 the Shelby GT500 was equipped with the 427 big-block which, although detuned, still put out 390 horsepower. Then in April the 427 made way for Ford’s shiny new weapon, the 428 Cobra Jet. Rated at only 335 horses, in actuality it produced 410 horsepower at 5400rpm and 440 lb-ft of torque at 3400rpm. Changes to the “police pursuit” 428 included revised heads with larger intake and exhaust valves, the competition 427 intake manifold, 735-cfm Holley R-4174 four-barrel carburetor, an oilpan windage tray and a functional Ram-Air induction system. To mark the change to the new engine, the GT500 was renamed GT500KR for King of the Road.

The other significant addition to the 1968 Shelby lineup is well represented here in the form of this superbly restored Highland Green GT500KR convertible. According to the SAAC Registry, this exceptional car is one of only five KR convertibles in this color equipped with both the Toploader four-speed manual transmission and factory air conditioning.
Great care was taken in restoring this rare beast to as-original condition. The understated but lustrous Highland Green paint, wood-grain trimmed black interior and engine compartment are correct in every detail. In addition to the twin-scoop fiberglass hood, custom front- and rear-end treatments and other Shelby body mods, the car also wears the Cobra Jet badging exclusive to the KR. White “GT500KR” sill striping, white-lettered Goodrich tires and Kelsey-Hayes Magstar wheels provide the final visual cues.
Most KR convertibles were well-optioned, and this car is no exception. Performance is augmented by the GT Equipment Group, power steering and power brakes with front discs, while the 3.00:1 Traction-Lok rear end takes advantage of the engine’s prodigious torque. In addition to the Shelby Cobra instruments and trim, the Interior Décor Group, tilt-away steering column, AM radio and tinted glass add to occupant comfort.
A milestone in the Shelby saga, this rare GT500KR is listed in the SAAC World Registry and documented with both Deluxe and Personal Statistic Marti Reports.
